Know your call charges
Numbers starting 0800 or 0808 are free from UK landlines and mobiles. Numbers starting 0300 or 0345 cost the same as a normal call to a 01 or 02 number, which means they come out of your inclusive minutes on almost every mobile and landline plan. If a website asks you to call an 084, 087 or 09 number to reach a government department, close it: the official line is always an 0800 or 0300 number, and we link the gov.uk source on every page so you can see for yourself.
